The third song, "O D B", reminds me of Venetian Snares "Chocolate Wheelchair" album, the snare tones and break construction as well as the happier backing synths. This album is littered with hip hop interludes from the likes of Aesop Rock and members of Wu-tang Clan, adding greatly to the character of the release, aggressive and playful.

Hexis - "XI"

Hexis appeared on a 3 way split I posted a while back and took the blue ribbon for best tunes on the split, despite subpar production value. With this one, however, they've upped the ante. Taking the foundation of their efforts on that split and turning it up a notch, both in terms of pure brutality and aggression as well as proper production value, this is a fucking monster.

Released less than a week after the split I mentioned above and previously posted, and at the same time as another release from them entitled "X", "XI" is a no holds barred monolith of blackened post grind. Huge riffs all over the place, blazing fast super technical drums that give way to half time backbeats, both a well executed growl and scream for vocals, heavy on the low ends - it's pretty much perfect. When the 7th track of this one is over, I thoroughly and completely want more. Good thing they released "X" as well and that I've never heard it, about to go download that and get some more of my Hexis fix right now.

A properly produced EP of death metal with melodic elements and some black metal tones here and there. 'Nuff good musicianship, choice growl from the vocalist, sick logo. Nothing earth shattering, but definitely enjoyable if you like metal - especially of the death variety.

Here's another incredible one man band operating in the supposed black metal realm. Only this time, it's more ritualistic, more outer space, more psychedelic, more droning. But, fuck, it's good. While not quite as prolific as my hero for such relevant things, Gnaw Their Tongues etc, I think Wyrm is going to quickly be one to watch in that regard - incredible out there music and with frequent releases. Wyrm's already got seven on his Bandcamp, along with this one on the incredible Drowning netlabel. Decidedly more ambient and less aggressive than Mories with Gnaw Their Tongues, I can hear Mories with his Seriom project here in places - definitely that kind of vibe.. Anyhow, sorry to always compare things to Mories or Gnaw Their Tongues; but if I am using that comparison it's because the material being compared is quite good. And this definitely is.

A sort of esoteric blend of forward thinking production and songwriting with more ritual-esque and world - almost tribal at times - vibes that sounds as though it was pulled equally from one of the greatest movies you've never seen and one of the most elaborate, almost lifelike, video games you've never played. At moments you feel like you've been taken to see some sort of metaphysical shaman of sound in a smoky post apocalyptic futurejazz bar and others you are walking through a dimly lit forest collecting coins and gems while slaying beasts unlike you've ever encountered in any fairy tale or science fiction book, movie, or game. Undeniably cinematic, wavering between hopeful and desperate, "7" from Digital Gnosis is truly a magnificent collection of music.

Really great stuff that I can't possibly explain any better than the review from Aquarius Records, which reads:

The sound of Servile Sect is epic, and majestic, the guitars glistening sheets of sound, the surface of that sound peppered with bits of electronic shimmer, causing the long drawn out riffery to reflect and refract, tiny little sonic events occurring every second, the surface alive and constantly squirming and changing color, but viewed from afar, it's simply a blown out undulating buzz. Those guitars are digitized and processed, spread into thick smears of warm glowing whir, the riffs barely discernible beneath the constant roar of Servile Sect's sonic swirl The vocals add just more buzz to the mix, howling and wailing, but stretched into streaks of sonic violence, and drums, assuming there are any, are buried, festering beneath layer after layer of crushing guitar fuzz, emitting noxious rhythms that don't so much blast or pound as they do explode into tiny squalls of still more buzz. Occasionally, the buzz abates, leaving the guitar to sway lazily, the notes ringing out, the guitars lurking in the distance, but it's never long before the lilting melody is engulfed by a colossal buzzing roar, and the band locks into another extended psychfuzzblackdrone.

I like the website for Handmade Bird Records, the label responsible for unleashing this demon upon the earth, too.

I received an email a couple weeks ago with a very interesting offer. In the spirit of chain letters of old with a new twist. Music is the focus instead of superstition and fear of reprisal from some unknown force. We were asked to take the attached audio file, add a your own audio under a certain time limit, then send the file to 6 more people. The end result is fascinating. While most of the audio is of the noise/experimental variety, there are smatterings of other genres. I personally added some breakcore beats and odd samples. Some Finnish black metal originally released on a 3 cassette pack limited to 100 copies. There's talk of this eventually getting released on deluxe vinyl, we'll see if/when that happens. In the meantime, Circle Of Ouroborus seem to be fine sharing this about the internet and alright with others doing the same.

In it's 14 some odd tracks, it manages to keep any fan of black metal engaged from beginning to end, sometimes offering up slamming romps through almost punk tinged dungeon black metal all the way up through some sort of so-called "black gaze" with it's melding of true black metal stylings and some more sort of shoegaze varieties. I've listened to a handful of previous Circle Of Ouroborus efforts and this is, by far, their best outing. I dare say some previous efforts should be entirely overlooked and ignored. Not this one, though. Everything you're looking for when considering a sort of all encompassing conceptual black metal release.
