Loss Of Self - "Demo"

Seems like everyone is coming out of the woodwork with a black metal hybrid of one sort or another. I ain't mad. This time around it's straight up black metal and straight up post rock. It's better than that description makes it sound, though. Think of your favorite post rock outfit and rub blackness and distortion and mold all over it. That's what you get with this short & sweet effort from Loss Of Self.

Queen Of Heathens - "Ethereality"

Great fuzzy guitars, deliberate drums with a nice dash of reverb, all sorts of drones and feedback noise, squelchy screamy vocals. This is a nice dose of black metal with drone and noise elements thrown in the mixture. Crafted by the one known as The Cartographer, possibly a female - based on the name of this particular project and the overall sound of the vocals - disguised as Queen Of Heathens with the release "Ethereality". Get murky.

Kapala - "Moon Rivers"

Super limited cassette run no longer available, now for free from the super incredible and previously featured Tagobella label. This time from Kapala, who deliver ridiculous psychedelic blackened instrumental drone across a total of 5 tracks. Real good for the headphone laptop work posse as well as the drugged out freakzoids.

Outer Gods - "The Mountains Den" Demo

If you injected Sunn O))) with more straightforward electronics in the form of synth washes and ambient soundscape construction, while also subtracting the truly distorted guitars and occasional growling chants - you would have Outer Gods. Atlanta based ambient drone metal curators and creators definitely giving a nod to Sunn O))) and similar, while taking a slight detour down a path they've paved themselves. "The Mountain Den" demo is heady and uplifting while remaining lonely and sinister sounding at the same time.

Swine - "Marked By The Baron"

Lo-fi super cult black metal with some dashes of death metal from now defunct Vanguard Productions. Out of print vinyl release and subsequent rip from Swine. "Marked By The Baron" is fuzzed out guitars, echoed guttural growls, and an air of pure unadulterated evil.

qwertzuiop - "Rebirth"

Hungarian black ambient drone project from the peculiarly titled one man band qwertzuiop. Orchestral and epic, dark and brooding. Not quite black metal, not quite ambient, not quite drone - but all of those things at the same time. Emotive and emotional.

SUNN O))) – “LIVE AT HOPSCOTCH FESTIVAL, SEPTEMBER 8, 2012 “

I write at, and also run, Grindthieves and have tried to make it a habit - a successful one, thusfar - of not posting the same thing here and at Grindthieves. Had to make an exception for this one, though. For obvious reasons. Enjoy.

The Eye Unclouded - "Tongues Like Mazes"

Is it black metal? I suppose so. It's definitely "progressive metal", or whatever the kids are calling it, too. There's a good amount of that ambient/drone metal flavor, to be certain. There's no vocals, but really you don't need or even want any on this one. Progressive ambient post instrumental black technical metal? Ubetcha.

Bellow - "Bellow E.P."

Pretty much all year long I have been blown away by the amount of incredible music spewing forth from the womb that is my home town of Minneapolis, MN. Some of the stuff has been covered here on Magicore, other stuff has been covered over at Grindthieves, and even more I've just kind of kept to myself or shared with only a handful of people. Nevertheless, let me just reiterate how amazed I am at the quantity of quality music coming from the Twin Cities. Everything from hip hop to trap to drum'n'bass to dubstep to techno to noise to black metal to doom metal and beyond.

Bellow is a blackened funeral doom band hailing from Minneapolis, which I discovered not through my connections to or roots still in my home town but via the always incredible Terminal Escape blog. If you're not already a regular reader and fan of Terminal Escape, bookmark the shit and fix that problem. Anyhow, consisting of 6 members and formerly known as Toil, Bellow offer up a free 3 track EP of slow and brooding doom metal with a blackened kiss of fuzz and keyboards/piano throughout. Emotional - depressing at times, hopeful at others - the mood herein is heavy like dense fog while the musicianship is painfully slow and painstakingly meticulous. Bittersweet and melancholic dirges to conjure demons with or make babies to.

SYPHLUST - "Fuck You Bruce Willis"

As if the dude behind James Doesn't Exist et al isn't prolific enough already, he basically finishes off and rounds out the band called Syphlust, cited as a guest on each individual track and the album as a whole. Following the trend of all Nikolai Gawin related output, this shit is incredible. He, along with two other rude dudes, craft some really over the top brutally awesome noisy grindy chaotic mathy hardcore. Check the shit out. I mean, if you think you can handle it, anyhow. Torn Flesh Records strikes again.
