Doth - "Datura Wrightii"

When you think of black metal, you usually think of corpse paint and snow for a visual representation, thanks in no small part to the Norwegian regions & beyond who have kicked out so much trve cvlt black metal over the years. I can't speak for corpse paint or a lack thereof on this one, but there is certainly no snow. Neither corpse paint nor snow make a difference, though, when it comes to Doth.

Hailing from the Sonoran desert here in the good old state of Arizona, this is a free 2 track release originally available in a short play cassette single format. Long since sold out, it's now available from the svper awesome Tagobella label which, despite sounding terribly close to your best tasting worst fast food mistake, happens to have a ton of other great material available for free in a digital format or cheap in hard copy. Tagobella has already been featured here and will likely appear again. So get to know the label and some of the realms they operate in, sooner rather than later, because I think you'll have some serious catching up to do if you don't get busy right now.

This release from Doth is two tracks of trve desert black metal. The kind of stuff that would make a perfect soundtrack to a truly gruesome desert  murder scene in some twisted B horror flick that you can't help but love. This stuff is raw and borderline psychedelic, ritualistic in execution. Marvelous black metal. From a desert.

Fanapth - "Untitled"

Phoenix based black metal outfit Fanapth with an untitled release, originally available on a super limited run of 40 cassettes now available for free download. I'm going to see these guys with the incredible Sutekh Hexen next month, so being on that bill should give you an idea of how legit this band is. Proper depressive black metal simultaneously bordering on melodic and noisy.

Galenus - "Ideology"

I've been finding a lot of incredible music from Chicago lately. Midwest, WHAT?! Here's another recent awesome discovery from the windy city. Galenus. A duo that crafts ripping and brutal technical death and grind varieties of heavy metal. Nice guttural growls complimented with slightly higher pitched shrieks over some truly relentless drum work and riffs. Nothing super innovative, but this is quite well produced and really tight technical heaviness - so if that's your thing, you're gonna love this.

Kymeris - "x"

Find me more than a few bits of instrumental black metal that are enjoyable to listen to. You can't, because there's not a lot of instrumental black metal that you can make it through and actually confess to enjoying. Kymeris is a mysterious black metal project that's based in Poland. It's instrumental, it's black metal, and it's downright enjoyable. I actually wish the tracks were longer and there were more of them; they end too abruptly, besides just not being long enough to begin with - almost like they are clips as opposed to full songs. Unfortunate logo and cover art, too. But, this is a solid listen.

BOK Darklord - "Lulu"

I love old Metallica and I love old Lou Reed. I can't really stand anything I've heard from either in the last decade, perhaps longer. So, for that reason alone this album is worth taking the time to read about and potentially listen to. Truth be told, though, if you like plunderphonics and crafted noise, this is a pretty solid release worth your time. I can't say more about it than that and what the accompanying writeup says, which reads:
In late 2011, the musical giants Metallica and Lou Reed released the universally-despised ‘Lulu’, 2 discs of collaborative work that one reviewer claimed was not quite as worthwhile as ‘wanking into a sock.’ Inspired, two other musical giants, Buttress O’Kneel and Lucas Darklord, decided to take it upon themselves to create a Lulu that was slightly better than wanking into a sock. They did this by each separately sampling and remixing material by Lou Reed or Metallica (with one artist on each track ‘playing’ the ‘Lou Reed’ while the other would ‘play’ the ‘Metallica’). These two separate remixes were then edited into collaborative Lulu pieces, which were given identical names to the tracks on Metallica and Lou Reed’s Lulu, and exactly the same track lengths, without bearing any resemblence to their odious counterparts. In essence, BOK DARKLORD’s Lulu is a revisionist concept album that attempts to replace the original work, acting as though that repugnant flop never happened at all. And best of all, it can still be enjoyed while wanking into a sock.
So. Yeah. Other than misspelling resemblance, that blurb is pretty marvelous and descriptive and reason enough more to go ahead and try this one on, don't you think?

Black Pus - Pus Mortem

Photobucket

Lightning Bolt drummer Brian Chippendale spews forth 8 gooey, murkified jam-a-lams perfect for those craving a noise enema and/or fresh breakbeats to groove and grind to. Spastic breaks, crunchy bass waves, and vocals that sound like they came from the bottom of a noise mans pedal box all characterize Black Pus' sound. A few of the tracks devolve into stoney psychedelic fuzz and loop fests. Perfect jams to help you space out and endure the last gasps of summers heat offensive.

Besvikelsens Dystra Monotoni - "Demo I"

Russian one man space black metal and beyond. This is a link to his first demo, as the demos and releases and splits continue on in his discography you get a better sense for what he is trying to accomplish with his sound. Sometimes he succeeds with resounding success, other times it falls a bit short or feels out of place. No matter what, some pretty cool sounds in the ambient / black metal / industrial realms. Check 'em out. Buncha free releases on his site, keep up to date on his Facebook page for even more plus additional information.

Gatekeeper - EXO Game

Cult retro electronic outfit Gatekeeper have recently released their epic new album EXO, and now you can experience the album in game form thanks to this website which launched it today! From the gameplay walkthrough shown below, this appears to be an impressive homage to both the future and what the past has donated to the present. The imagery reminds me of a more organic Blade Runner environment, with aesthetics that harken to the 90's both visually and musically, in a highly enjoyable form.

Ohmega Sir - The Homecoming

Photobucket

Splatterkore Records and Ohmega Sir bring you steaming fresh slices of breakcore pie. Filled to the brim with dark soundscapes and classic breaks seasoned with fresh edits. Ohmega Sir's breakcore is of the variety that relies more on composed backgrounds, as opposed to the sample heavy variety, making the material come across in a more serious manner. Another solid release from Splatterkore and a solid step in Ohmega Sir's musical evolution.

Cellgraft - "Cellgraft LP"

The incredible and awesome band Cellgraft is calling it quits. Unfortunate as all hell, to be certain. Another Florida great bites the dust. Ah, well. At least they are giving away their final record for free on their Bandcamp page, eh? Chaotic grindcore at its finest. This is a no brainer, go get it.

Basis - "Ether"

Spectacular self released space ambient business right here courtesy of Basis. Very lush and rolling, like a nebula exploding in slow motion forever. Hints of some of dubstep's more atmospheric workers (think Burial) here and there, with layers and layers of synth washes and natural atmospherics, sprinkled with sparse electronics percussion.
